Devlog of demo 4 #8

◇ Day 9 of Demo 4 Production◇

Or at least that's what you said if you didn't see my last devlog! Shameful...

◇ Day 10 of Demo 4 Production◇

To recap, on my last journey through the game development universe, I was continuing my noble mission of "remaking" the "combustion center" stage! So let's continue developing the level...

Or that's what I would say if I were a developer who focused on a single objective... but I'm not...

"BOOM"

I just created a new area called "Space Avenue"...

Ok, before you think I've completely lost my mind (which is still a possibility), I'll explain in more depth what's going on...

Before I started rebuilding the combustion center, I already had in mind a new level that would debut in this demo and that would serve as a connection point between the "spherical warehouse" from the third demo and the recently revived combustion center, a kind of "mini level".

Sooo... in order for me to be able to launch our lava level, I'll first have to have the level in space.

Then you ask me "And what is this space avenue?"

Well, the space avenue is nothing more, nothing less than:

An avenue... in space...

(One of the few times when the use of artificial intelligence is completely justifiable)

Yeah, I know, a revolutionary idea! It had to have come from my head...

So, to have a little variety in my development journey and to stop dreaming about lava every night (I see it everywhere...), let's focus today on building this new scenario and the general idea of this location.

Starting with the origins...

In the classic game, the only area that could be considered evidence of this phase would be a stretch that connected the first phase with the lava phase, a small flat straight line where it was possible to see the planet of cubes from afar when gravity was weaker, which was pretty cool, a good way to connect the areas of the game and let the player take a breather from the game's events, but I'm not satisfied...

So, with the context in mind, I'm going to take the idea of weak gravity and... space?

There's not much to take from this area, maybe the planet? I'll see if it fits into the story, I mean, the scriptwriter will see if it fits into the story.

So, using artificial intelligence, I started to create the idea of what this place would be like artistically, and before you say "Oh, you're using robots to make the game" I had no choice! Google wasn't willing to cooperate...

So, looking at the photos, I realized a few things:

1. It seems that the artificial intelligences are Star Wars fans.

2. Apparently they don't know what Neon is!!!!!

In short, I decided to use man's oldest tool to create an idea of what this level would be like... the head...

and I went to see what would come of it...

At first, I made the roads where I used the neon style to draw the player's attention, as if to say "nice, huh? Don't touch!!!", besides giving a cool touch of something space-like.

And for the platforms, I know something more industrial, giving a typical spherical style to the level, "Steel and Light".

(Oh my God, I used the word "steel" on the internet in 2025, how dangerous...)

Okay, now with the models ready, time for LEVEL DESIGN...

(LEVEL DESIGN...)

(level design...)

And to start...

I'm going to copy and paste the entire hub world, taking advantage of the space structure it already had, I'm going to change the colors to give it a less "space, nostalgic and mysterious" vibe and something more "space, WHERE THEY WANT TO KILL YOU!", I'm going to use the famous "Control + C - Control + V" to create several replicas of the model of the road where the cargo passes, giving the impression of being an infinite path (yes, I ruined the magic of the level, welcome to reality my friend), and to give it a different feel and reference the old version of this area, I'm going to reduce the force of gravity, so you feel like a real "astronaut cube", a feeling you've certainly always dreamed of having in the world of games. And that's it! Now all I have to do is start creating the level itself!

...

Or that's what I would say if I were a developer who doesn't procrastinate... but I'm not, so...

See you next time ;)
